"Patrol field camp was a refreshing and new experience for me, in fact, probably for most of us, as this was be the first time we would be having outfield activities in Marsiling. Well, there will always be a sense of anticipation and nervousness amongst us, not knowing really what to expect, even though the details were briefed to us earlier on before the actual event. Stories that circulated among instructors and some senior cadets eventually reached our ears, in which they mentioned about the severe lack of sleep during the field camp. I was rather worried as I was already tired due to the hectic schedule back in the wingline, and I did not get much sleep even when I book out. Well, whatever will come, will come. With this mentality of mine, I proceeded on for the 3-day-2-night field camp.

Day 1 was merely navigation, consisting of 2 parts, day and night. What makes this navigation really interesting is the fact that we would be using air photos. This was our first time and experience exploring the Marsiling-Mandai region using air photos. It was not really a pleasant, but nevertheless, enriching experience as we mislocated our checkpoints, but eventually found all of them along the way, completing the course. The lesson I have learnt is that never to underestimate the air photos. Basically, we copied the grids from the map and ‘pasted’ it on the air photo, thinking that nothing will go wrong using this method. However, we were mistaken, as we proceeded on and eventually, bashing aimlessly through the forest finding the correct checkpoint, which in fact, we have encountered earlier on.

Anyway, I did not realise there are still places in Singapore where you can really get good scenery until the patrol field camp. During our day navigation, we could see a bird-eye view of the Singapore Turf Club, and also the row of flats and neighbourhood facilities in Marsiling, especially on a 60-metre hilltop. The feeling was especially exhilarating, once you reached the hilltop, with such picturesque scenery welcoming your arrival. What more can you ask for?

Day 2 and 3 were subsequently missions. Basically, there were 3 day missions and a night mission. We managed to learn the SOP in giving out operational orders in a section, and I realised that even though most of us might not be signing on as NS regulars, such skills are also very applicable and useful outside in the workforce, especially when you are tasked to plan and execute a certain project. Section operation orders are really in sequence and well-designed such that it ensures every single soldier understands what mission he has been given and what is he supposed to execute to ensure his job is done successfully.

Anyway, the ambush missions were rather interesting, especially when you had to be in a proning position to wait for your ‘prey’ to be in the danger area, and seize the chance to attack and kill your target. It may seem easy, but the waiting process is certainly painful, especially when you lack sleep. Every single moment you will be fighting the z-monster, i.e. trying not to doze off. This is extremely important, especially in real-life war time, as if the enemy passes by while you are sleeping, you could be in danger if he spots you before you do so. And also, by letting the enemy pass by will allow him indirectly to information deemed useful to him, eventually resulting in us being in a disadvantageous situation.

After which we did our reconnaissance patrols. We learnt how to be tactical and avoid danger areas if possible. Again, as an officer-to-be and a soldier, such a skill is extremely essential, especially in times of war.

In overall, the patrol field camp is an enriching and fruitful experience to me."
